Cheaper than MetanX for ladies with MTHFR mutations/thrombophilia

19 10 2012

From Moni of the Yahoo e-group on Reproductive Immunology:

Metanx is recommended for thrombophilia patients, as it contains the activated forms of 3 B vitamins that we can readily absorb. I looked it up and here are the amounts of the three activated B vitamins found in each tablet of Metanx:

L-methylfolate (same as Metafolin, also known as 5-MTHF): 3 mg
Pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (B6 p-5-p): 35 mg
Methylcobalamin (activated B12): 2 mg

For the methylfolate, if you go to Amazon and see the Life Extension brand, they have it in 1mg (or 1000mcg, same thing) pills which is what I have ordered: com/gp/product/ B003S5RVM4/ ref=oh_details_ o01_s00_i00

You would need three of these to reach the 3mg amount found in each MetanX pill.

As for the B6 p-5-p, I found it in 25mg doses (Source Naturals brand): com/Source- Naturals- Coenzymated- 25mg-Tablets/ dp/B001G7R44Q/ ref=sr_1_ 5?s=hpc&ie= UTF8&qid= 1350916121& sr=1-5&keywords= Source+Naturals+ p+5+p

This is a bit under the of 35 mg amount found in each Metanx pill. I know that too much B6 can cause LUFS or poor ovulation, so you will not want to go over 100mg/day of any kind of B6. (Look for it in any other multivitamins you are taking also to be sure.)

And for the B12 Methyl Cobalamin, I found it in 1000 mcg doses (same as 1mg) – you would need to take 2 of these to reach the same amount in one pill of Metanx (2mg): com/gp/product/ B002FJW3ZY/ ref=oh_details_ o02_s00_i02

I think most women taking MetanX take 2 pills of it a day, so that means *double everything* if you want to reach the same amounts of these B vitamins found in a full daily dose:

L-methylfolate (same as Metafolin, also known as 5-MTHF): 6 mg/day
Pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (B6 p-5-p): 70 mg/day
Methylcobalamin (activated B12): 4 mg/day

He & Me Plus 3: Life With Triplets Un-wrapped

Okay, so, it’s not like I think everything I say and do is so damn awesome that everyone should know about it. In a blog. It’s just that as if being blind, and a vegetarian, with anxiety/OCD, and having the ability to accidentally break almost anything, and not liking chocolate, would be enough. But no. I also have to have IVF. Could I be any more minority? So it’s like god is playing one big joke on me… and I am not going down without a fight. In fact, God, I’m going to tell your mum on you. Well I would if my knowledge of religion was good enough for me to figure out who your mum is. Eve? Is it Eve? Well, Eve, this is what your son has been up to, and God, I just got you grounded pretty much forever. In your face, God. Ha.
